Materials: “Broken Circle” exercise for four groups, “Broken Circle” handouts for classmates, “Four Stage Rocket” handouts for classmates. Objective: To demonstrate the interdependence necessary for successful collaborative learning. The “Broken Circle” exercise reinforces the importance of all members contributing for the common good. Students will identify the skills needed for effective group work. Focus & Review: (5 minutes) Briefly mention the concept of Collaborative Learning and how it has shown to be beneficial to most students, especially those who tend not to participate in traditional classroom activities. Introduce, explain and work the “Broken Circle” exercise Input: (5 minutes) The necessary skills for success will be explained to students in the context of roles within the group. Each role (or job) within the group requires different skills; as group members alternate roles they will be required to develop different skills. Each student should ultimately possess the total package of skills. Explain the “Four Stage Rocket” concept of learning and how each “stage” is a skill. Relate the skills to roles within the groups: 1. Brevity or Conciseness: the Timekeeper makes sure no single member does all the talking. Contributions must be short and to the point. 2. Listening: the Recorder takes notes during the discussion making sure to document who contributes what. 3. Reflecting: the Speaker summarizes the group’s results and presents them to the class.
Make Sure Everyone Contributes: the Leader guides the discussion and encourages all members to participate. (5 minutes)
